The War of 1812 Grand Tactical

and School of the Sailor

Attached is important documents and information concerning the Grand Tactical and School of the Sailor taking place at Niagara-on-the-Lake, at Historic Ft. George July 16-17, 2005.

Greetings to all members of the Wolfe, (aka Kentucky militia)

Attached to this posting are a number of word documents sent as attachments which may explain some of the outstanding questions some of you may have concerning the War of 1812 Grand Tactical/School of the Sailor. The event is still very much on schedule. I have received a list of information from Dave Webb, coordinator of the event as well as a schedule update from Vic Suthren about the School of the Sailor activity. The camping area along with a visual of the ship's assault on the fort are attached in PDF form.

I will be registering us as the "Gun Crew Wolfe". We are one of several ships' companies represented, but we are also one of the largest. I trust this will give us some clout.

The event is structured so that officer's are not elected but earn their position by exam and experience. The command structure is listed below in a jpeg attached.

As of June 15th, below is the roster we have for the Crew of the Wolfe
attending the tactical and School of the Sailor. Cary Carpenter and Tom Edwards are registered
to be aboard one of the vessels.
As of right now we have 6 tents registered. One marquee/mess tent and 5 wedge tents.
We may need extra wedge tents for those who may not have an appropriate wedge
We will have a fire for coffee.
Since food is provided, light cooking will be the order of the day

Concerning the event in particular,
Here are the confirmed highlights from Dave Webb.

• A highlight of the weekend will be a naval landing and battle commemorating the 1813 Battle of Fort George.
Two battle re-enactments, a short parade, and ongoing displays are planned for the weekend.

• Registration is at Navy Hall, not at the Fort George gates, as in the
past. (See directions)

• The US and British camps are on the South end outside the fort gates

• Thursday arrivals and Sunday departures are fine, just let me know so I
can be here to set you up.

• We do have some limited barracks space, and this is especially for anyone
flying or traveling a long distance who does not want to bring tentage.

• We are providing breakfast and lunch on both Saturday and Sunday.

• A tavern is planned for Saturday Evening

• Everyone is on their own for Saturday dinner, and this supports the tall
ships. I will place a bulk order for a chicken dinner. Please let me know
with your registration if you are interested.

• We sign our participants up as Parks Canada volunteers so that you are
covered by our third party liability insurance. This event is specifically
covered in our insurance. We do encourage groups and individuals to obtain
insurance, but you do not need to provide proof of insurance.

I have included some information on the Canadian Firearms Act. This information can be accessed at:
http://www.cfc-ccaf.gc.ca/info_for-renseignement/factsheets/powder_e.asp?printVersion=1

Licensing and registration requirements for modern weapons do not apply to antiques and reproductions of flintlock long arms such as muskets and rifles. No permit is required to bring a flintlock musket or rifle into Canada. You might wish to bring this information with you in case you encounter a Customs officer who may not be aware of the situation. You must declare that you are bringing a reproduction antique flintlock firearm into Canada at the border. It should not be loaded, and it should be securely stored and deactivated (Remove flint and/or put on a trigger lock). We will be informing Canadian and US customs agencies well before the event to minimize problems.
It is important to provide some form of Identification when passing into Canada and returning to the US. Driver's License, Social Security card, or Birth Certificate. If you have a US pastport, that will be even better. We are mindful of the increased security on our borders, but is NOT a hindrance to events in Canada.
